Multimedia Annotation and Global Languages – A Mini-Workshop
May 16, 2014, 10:30 am – Noon
Building 16, Room 676
We are all familiar with writing our thoughts in the margins of a text. Is there a way to turn this practice into a participatory online learning experience for our students in global languages? And what if students could also add videos, images, sounds, and other materials into their annotations to strengthen their arguments? Does this all lead to a deeper understanding of texts, more nuanced discussions, and more thoughtful essays?
To find out more about using annotations in global language teaching, please join the HyperStudio team for a workshop on our digital humanities tool, Annotation Studio. Annotation Studio is a web-based annotation application that draws students into the traditional activities of humanistic scholarship. It is so easy to use that it is immediately accessible to students with no prior experience with close textual analysis. Instead of passively reading texts, Annotation Studio encourages students to open up texts, developing new critical approaches to texts as they reflect upon them. As Annotation Studio supports reading comprehension, textual interpretation, and collaborative learning (and many more!), it is particularly well suited for language classes.
Please join us for this hands-on workshop, during which you will learn how to use and integrate Annotation Studio into your classes. The HyperStudio team will be on hand to answer any questions you might have, as will FL&L instructors who have already used Annotation Studio in their classes. Please bring your own laptop.
While the mini-workshop is open to non-MIT foreign language university and college faculty, we do ask that if you do wish to attend, please register by emailing us at hyperstudio@mit.edu.
Is this workshop open to general public?
I’m Associate Professor of Hispanic Studies at Wheaton College, MA. I’ve playing with Annotation Studio. I believe this is the right tool for using in my Spanish Literature classes.
I appreciate your attention,
Domingo
